Gassho-zukuri(thatched roof house) Village

Place

About 50km from Kanazawa station, 1 hour, about 60km from Toyama station, 1 hour 20 minutes by car

There is a “Shirakawa-go / Gokayama Gassho-zukuri(thatched roof house) Village” along National Route 156 via the Tokai Hokuriku Road. This is a group of gassho-style villages in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama in the Hietsu region. It was registered as a Unesco World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) on December 9, 1995, making it the sixth World Heritage Site in Japan.

The gassho-style roof is about 45 to 60 degrees, and this slope is thought to take into consideration the reduction of work to remove snow due to heavy snowfall and drainage due to the fact that it is also a heavy rainfall area.

Gokayama, located in Toyama Prefecture, has two villages, Sugayama and Ainokura.

In addition, at the midpoint of Route 156 connecting these two places, there is one of the oldest gassho houses built about 350 years ago called the “Murakami family’s House”, and the typical architectural style of gassho style remains as it was at that time. Designated as a national important cultural property in 1958.

In addition, there is a gassho-zukuri village in Shirakawa-go, which is located in Gifu prefecture, and you can see the traditional Japanese living style.

By the way, the recommended meal on this trip is a soba restaurant called “Jippensha”, which is almost opposite the Murakami family’s House.
